Unknown artist This pastoral scene incorporates a number of the classical conventions of ideal, poetic landscapes espoused by the French Baroque painter Claude Lorrain. His landscape formula, including framing trees, expansive atmosphere, and the narrative element of a path leading off into the distance, became a model for the influential eighteenth-century concept of the picturesque and struck a chord with many artists throughout the nineteenth century by offering a means to order and idealize the natural world.
