George Henry Yewell (1830-1923), American Lost in thought, George Yewell's young (probably Italian) peasant woman at a fountain seems to contemplate her fate. Her strap has fallen off her shoulder suggesting either lost innocence or listless indifference. That her pot is not even under the flow of water emphasizes her absorption in thought, rather than attention to her chore.
