The Secondhand Prose Bookstore sells quality used books at bargain prices year round and is operated by the Friends of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. The collection changes regularly with new fiction and non-fiction arriving frequently! 

Make your dollars stretch at Secondhand Prose! Purchases are by monetary donation!

Book Donation guidelines:

• Books are accepted only during operating hours

• Only two medium-sized boxes at a time accepted

• Books should be in good shape and appropriate for sale

  • The bookstore will not accept:
    Encyclopedias
    Textbooks
    Magazines
    Media (VHS/DVD videos, music, audiobooks)

Who We Are

The Friends of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum are involved in fundraising activities for the benefit of the Athenaeum. Friends may volunteer at the Secondhand Prose Bookstore, organize pie sales, or assist various Friends-sponsored programs and events.

Friends strive to improve, advocate for and make resources and services of the Athenaeum more widely known in the community.

Funding from the Friends have made it possible for the Athenaeum to acquire a microfilm reader, a lectern and projector stand for Athenaeum Hall, the new Stephen Huneck library cards, and books for area childcare centers. In addition, Friends supply refreshments and flowers for some Athenaeum events and support summer reading programs for youth and adults.

Friends-sponsored events have included the Annual Fall Pie Sale, Maplefest, Victorian Christmas Holiday programs, and summer tea in Athenaeum Hall.
