Margery Eva Lang Hamilton - Heidi

Heidi, 1934
OIL ON CANVAS, 64 x 70 ½ inches
Funded by a grant from the Public Works of Art Project of the Civil Works Administration
Lang’ choice of scenes from the Swiss author Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, like in her Hiawatha mural, emphasizes themes of innocence and peace in nature. The young orphan Heidi watches over her goats in a meadow among the Alps, while her friend Peter sits nearby. In a state of unrefined, uncorrupted bliss, Heidi is shielded from the evils of the modern world by the encircling mountains.
