The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum Seed Library is a community project that started through the interest of one of our patrons. People can participate in the Seed Library regardless of whether they are patrons of the Athenaeum. The only requirement is that participants register in our membership notebook.  We recommend that members save seeds from their harvest or contribute organic seed packets to help maintain our inventory.

How to Borrow Seeds

1.      Fill out the membership form in the “Membership” binder.

2.      Take a Membership Information Form (half sheet) and a Seed Saving bookmark.

3.      Put the Seed Marker in place when you take a seed packet from the cabinet.

4.      Take only the seeds you need and use a paper clip to seal the seed packet. Remove the Seed Marker once you have replaced the seed packet.

5.      Fill out a separate envelope for each type of seed you plan to take. As a minimum include: variety, species name, & year. More information is better! Seed envelopes are provided by the Athenaeum.

6.   Put seeds in envelopes. Take 2-3 seeds for every plant you intend to grow this season.

How to Donate and Return Seeds

1. Read the Seed Saving Bookmark.
2. Plant and harvest.
3. Let some plants go to seed. Save seeds for yourself and the library. Get an envelope
    from the library.
4. Fill in the label with as much info as possible. As a minimum, fill in variety, species, & year.
5.  Enter the seeds you donated on your membership form.
6.  Place donated seeds in the plastic box labeled Donated Seeds.
