Middlebury College professor Enrique García reviews the American superhero genre and how it has served as a tool to disseminate utopian ideas about immigration and the American Dream. While discussing characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and La Borinqueña, García reflects on comic artists’ struggles to overcome imperial ideas of white supremacy, heteronormativity, and American exceptionalism.

 About Enrique García

Professor Garcia with black sunglasses and a blue shirt, smilingEnrique García is Professor of Hispanic Visual Culture in the Luso-Hispanic Studies department at Middlebury College. His research focuses on international Hispanic/Latinx genre cinema and comic books. Enrique has published a book on Latinx comic book artists Jaime and Gilbert Hernández (The Hernandez Brothers: Love, Rockets, and Alternative Comics) and is currently preparing his book on Puerto Rico and the Superhero Genre.
