The library’s original collection consisted of 9,000 finely bound books selected by the noted bibliographer, William F. Poole, author of Poole’s Index, Librarian of Chicago’s famed Newberry Library, and one of the founders of the American Library Association.


2026 Tax Season Information

  • State Taxes - For Vermont state tax information, please visit the Vermont Department of Taxes website. Click on the menu on the left side to focus on Individuals, Business, Property, or other topics, or search in the upper right-hand corner. 

  • Federal Taxes - For federal tax information, please visit the Internal Revenue Service website. Click on a topic or use the search box in the upper right-hand corner to find information. 

    • KOHA is our web-based library software. You can search our catalog, renew books, and place holds on books from any computer with Internet access. See the KOHA Quick Reference Sheet for more features.  

    • How to log into your Library Account (KOHA) and Digital Resources 

      • Username: your library barcode [the 14-character alphanumeric code found on your library card that starts with 2VSPY

      • Password: your last name, first letter capitalized.

    • Kanopy is a video streaming service that provides instant access to thousands of critically acclaimed movies, documentaries and Kids favorites.     • Value Line Financial Services - Value Line has been in business since 1931, providing financial research and analysis of 3,400 large, mid & small cap stocks using its proprietary ranking systems. Sorting by “Timeliness” lets you know which company’s stock might be worth buying now. Also download individual analyst reports of the companies you might be interested in following. 

      • Value Line’s YouTube series “One Stock to Buy Now” gives stock recommendations and some great tips & tricks.

    • The Vermont Department of Libraries (VTLIB) is here to support libraries of all kinds, as well as Vermonters throughout the state. VTLIB provides free access to online resources statewide, including video-based classes of all kinds, eBooks and eAudiobooks, research resources, career help, legal forms, car repair manuals, and much more, all accessed via a local library card. 

      • Udemy - Online Video Classes
        Udemy is an online learning platform offering over 20,000 video courses on a very wide range of topics, including business, programming, music, cooking, and much more! It offers well-structured video courses and assignments that can be completed at the user's own pace and in any order they choose. Read more about and access Udemy

      • Peterson’s Test and Career Prep - Career and Education Advancement Tools
        Peterson’s Test and Career Prep is specifically designed to help individuals prepare for standardized tests and explore career options. It provides job help such as career certification practice exams and vocational test prep tools for nursing, law enforcement, real estate, teaching, trucking, and more. It also offers standardized test preparation (like the SAT or GRE), undergraduate and graduate program research, tuition assistance information, and career advice, as well as help with resumes and cover letters.       • LegalForms - Fillable Legal Documents
        LegalForms offers a huge range of legal documents and templates for use in personal and business legal dealings. Where relevant, forms are specific to Vermont. Patrons can access documents for used car sales, bankruptcy, divorce, apartment rental agreements, creating wills, and much more. Read more about and access LegalForms

      • Chilton Library - Automobile Repair and Maintenance
        Chilton functions as an online repair manual for a wide range of cars and trucks. It provides instructions, diagrams, photos, and videos for repair and maintenance of numerous makes and models. Read more about and access Chilton Library

      • Vermont Online Library - Research Databases
        Vermont Online Library (VOL) offers a wide assortment of databases for all ages, and on a huge number of topics. It provides access to articles from academic journals, popular magazines, and newspapers. The In Context databases function like a modern encyclopedia, presenting articles with context, images, videos, and links. There are databases available for every age and skill-range, from elementary through post-graduate. Every public library, school library, and academic library in Vermont can access VOL for free.       • MyVermont.Gov - Newspapers and Ancestry
        Vermont residents can access Vermont newspaper articles and vital record information through Newspapers.com and Ancestry.com, by creating a MyVermont.Gov account. This initiative is made possible through a partnership with the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration. Read more about Newspapers/Ancestry and MyVermont.gov

  • The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum has 6 public computers that are connected to a black and white printer on the 2nd floor. Printing from you mobile device is available. There is 1 microfilm machine and 1 scanner. Copy machines are available on either floor.

    Printing is 20 cents per page. Photocopies are 25 cents per page.

  • 1 small room (2-3 people max) is available to be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact the library to schedule.  

  •  The ABLE Library is a free talking book and braille library service that provides large print and other reading formats to patrons. They are a program of the Vermont Department of Libraries and a network library for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), which is part of the Library of Congress. ABLE provides access to the NLS collection of audio books and braille. 

    • The ABLE Library serves patrons who are blind and visually impaired, and/or have a physical or reading disability that stops them from being able to read standard print. This service is available to anyone who qualifies and lives in Vermont. 

  • Legal Services Vermont (a nonprofit that serves residents around Vermont at no charge) has a new VTCourtForms tool for those who need to start a small claims case. Vermonters can use this free step-by-step tool on their phone or computer – something much like tax prep software – to complete forms to start a small claims lawsuit for cases involving $10,000 or less. Vermonters can access VTCourtForms on the Small Claims Roadmap at VTLawHelp.org 

  • Vermont State Park and Historic Site passes are available for check out at Vermont public libraries with your library card. Explore these very special natural places and our state’s rich history! This program is jointly sponsored by the Vermont Department of Libraries, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, and the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. 

  • The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum Seed Library is a community project that started through the interest of one of our patrons. People can participate in the Seed Library regardless of whether they are patrons of the Athenaeum. The only requirement is that participants register in our membership notebook.  We recommend that members save seeds from their harvest or contribute organic seed packets to help maintain our inventory.  

    How to Borrow Seeds 

    1.      Fill out the membership form in the “Membership” binder. 

    2.      Take a Membership Information Form (half sheet) and a Seed Saving bookmark. 

    3.      Put the Seed Marker in place when you take a seed packet from the cabinet.  

    4.      Take only the seeds you need and use a paper clip to seal the seed packet. Remove the Seed Marker once you have replaced the seed packet. 

    5.      Fill out a separate envelope for each type of seed you plan to take. As a minimum include: variety, species name, & year. More information is better! Seed envelopes are provided by the Athenaeum. 

    6.   Put seeds in envelopes. Take 2-3 seeds for every plant you intend to grow this season. 

    How to Donate and Return Seeds 

    1. Read the Seed Saving Bookmark. 
    2. Plant and harvest.  
    3. Let some plants go to seed. Save seeds for yourself and the library. Get an envelope        
        from the library. 
    4. Fill in the label with as much info as possible. As a minimum, fill in variety, species, & year. 
    5.  Enter the seeds you donated on your membership form. 
    6.  Place donated seeds in the plastic box labeled Donated Seeds.

    • Junior Edition - Magazine, newspaper and reference book database designed for junior high and middle school students. Years covered: 2000 to the present. 

    • Student Edition - Magazine, newspaper and reference book database designed for high school student research. Years covered: 1985 to the present.  

    • Opposing Viewpoints in Context - is an engaging online experience for those seeking contextual information and opinions on hundreds of today's hottest social issues. Drawing on the acclaimed Greenhaven Press series, the new solution features continuously updated viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, statistics, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites organized into a user-friendly portal experience.
