Self-Guided Tours
Built in 1873 to display the art collection of founder Horace Fairbanks (1820-1888), the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum's Art Gallery lays claim to being the oldest gallery in American still in its original form. Thanks in part to an extensive historic restoration project completed in 2003, the Art Gallery offers an outstanding opportunity to experience an American art collection as it would have been seen during the nineteenth century.
The following tours will help you explore the Art Gallery and take in the full scope of the art featured here. You can find these tours in the back of Mark Mitchell's St. Johnsbury Athenaeum: A Handbook to the Gallery Collection as well.
