The Secondhand Prose Bookstore sells quality used books at bargain prices year round and is operated by the Friends of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. The collection changes regularly with new fiction and non-fiction arriving frequently!
Make your dollars stretch at Secondhand Prose! Purchases are by monetary donation.
Donating Books
Books are accepted only during operating hours
Only two medium-sized boxes at a time accepted
Books should be in good shape and appropriate for sale
The bookstore will not accept:
Encyclopedias
Textbooks
Magazines
Media (VHS/DVD videos, music, audiobooks)
Volunteering at Secondhand Prose
Our all-volunteer staff is responsible for greeting and assisting customers, managing book inventory, handling customer cash donations, maintaining well-ordered shelves in the public space, evaluating and accepting donated books, sorting and shelving books, and promoting the store.
