The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum welcomes hometown author Shannon Brown, a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy (Class of 2003), for a special author reading and discussion.

Brown will read excerpts from her memoir Because of Jane, a powerful story that explores resilience, survival, and the role imagination can play in helping a child navigate difficult circumstances. Following the reading, Shannon will lead a thoughtful discussion around the themes and topics explored in the book and answer questions from the audience. The conversation will touch on childhood trauma, healing, and the importance of advocacy and awareness surrounding child abuse and domestic violence.

Shannon is also a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, where she earned a double degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Her professional background working with children, combined with her lived experiences, gives her a unique perspective and depth of understanding when speaking about childhood trauma, resilience, and healing.

This event is especially meaningful to Brown, who spent many hours in the Athenaeum growing up, finding comfort and escape in books and stories. Returning to share her own story in the very place that nurtured her love of reading makes this a true homecoming.

A book signing will follow the discussion, and copies of Because of Jane will be available.

This event is free, ADA accessible, and open to the public, and is in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
