Jervis McEntee - The Doge's Palace
Jervis McEntee (1828-1891), American
The Doge's Palace ( Venice), undated
OIL ON CANVAS, 11 ¾ x 19 ¼ inches
Gift of Mrs. Theodora Willard Best
Already established as a respected landscape painter in America, Jervis McEntee paid his only visit to Venice while on a yearlong European sojourn in 1868-69. This view toward St. Mark's Square from the Lagoon offers one of the city's most iconic vistas in late twilight. The effect heightens Venice's evocative mood by rendering its already bright colors even more vivid while dark storm clouds brew overhead.
