Bread and Roses, Too by Katherine Paterson is the Vermont Reads 2018 book. Come join in a lively discussion of the book in an informal setting. Adults and youth are invited to participate. Books are available for checkout at the front circulation desk.

Do you like pizza and movies? If you do and you are a student in grades 5 – 8, come join us for A Book, a Pizza, and a Movie. The featured book and movie is The Giver by Lois Lowry. We'll have a short book discussion over pizza and then view the movie. Although it is more interesting if you have read the book, it is not required prior to the movie. I have a few extra copies of the book, if you would like to check one out. Email Adele at awestfisher@stjathenaeum.org.
Enjoy holiday music and traditional dulcimer tunes with The Kingdom Mountain Dulcimer Club. Drop by any time between 12:30 and 2:30 PM.
Join in a family holiday tradition at the Athenaeum. Drop in any time after 4:00 PM to decorate a graham cracker gingerbread house. Location: Children’s Library. After 5:30 PM use the Children’s Library entrance. Everyone welcome!

Winnie the Pooh is celebrating National Animal Shelter Appreciation week by having a sleepover for his stuffed animal friends! Drop off your stuffed animal off by 6:00 PM on Friday, Nov. 10 to party with Pooh! Pick up at 10:30 AM Saturday, Nov. 11. Come enjoy breakfast treats, stories, and a report of night time activities!

Writer Beth Champagne will read aloud to school aged children from "Encounter," by Jane Yolen, and other picture books presenting Native American experience and wisdom traditions.
A themed craft and refreshments will follow the Storytime.

The August 21st solar eclipse is bound to be spectacular, and did you know that Vermont will experience a sixty percent eclipse? To celebrate the event, the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, in partnership with the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation (NKAF) and The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, is hosting its own partial eclipse viewing event. Come join our world class planetarium presenters and scientists for a fun, family friendly afternoon full of activities that’ll be sure to get you excited for this rare opportunity!

Outside in front of the Museum, from 1pm to 4pm on Monday, August 21st, we will teach you how to build your own solar observing pinhole projector, decorate a shoebox solar viewer, or you can take a peek through one of our specially made solar telescopes. Inside the museum we will be broadcasting live coverage of the path of totality and offering free planetarium shows. In addition, we will be demonstrating hands-on activities for young ones that will help them understand solar eclipses, provided by the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE).

Beth Champagne will get everybody moving with songs and games in French! Come ready to sing, laugh, and smile!
Beth has taught French to Northeast Kingdom children since 2000. Kids of all ages are welcome!
This year’s Summer Reading theme is “Build a Better World." Summer Reading kick-off will feature Jon Gailmor, a fun and engaging singer-songwriter that delights audiences of all ages! The performance is interactive and sure to create laughter. He will perform on Wednesday, June 21 at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments served. CDs will be available for purchase at the performance. Everyone welcome to attend!

Middle Schoolers, students going into 6th grade and graduating 8th, would you like some activities planned this summer just for you? Join the planning team for custom designed fun activities you want to do. Contact Adele West-Fisher (802-745-1391), Youth Services Librarian, by Friday, June 9.
Elementary and Middle School students will read original and favorite poetry as part of St. Johnsbury's PoemTown events. Pizza at 6 p.m. followed by readings at 6:30.

Geared to elementary age, but all ages welcome!
Why we are doing this: We are Capstone students at the St. Johnsbury Academy. This project is to help the children in Vermont learn about other cultures.
Students who have read 5 or more of the Dorothy Reads books are eligible to come vote for their favorite book at the Athenaeum. We will celebrate with a trivia challenge and an ice cream sundae party, with a topping for each book read. Must have an adult sign off on your books to enjoy all those toppings!
Come celebrate the customs and traditions of the Abenaki Tribe. Beth Champagne will share her native heritage through discussion and tales of how the Abenaki survived “Rogers Raid” in 1759 at Odanak, Quebec and the making of maple syrup--Abenaki style! A themed craft and refreshments to follow.
(This event has been rescheduled from March 14 due to the snowstorm.) In this fun and engaging memoir writing workshop, Reeve Lindbergh will walk us through the process of writing down thoughts and memories for ourselves, family, and others. This writing workshop is for all ages. Homeschoolers are encouraged to attend. Refreshments provided.
This activity is offered as Vermont Reads 2017 event.
The National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day” is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate. Drop in at the Athenaeum any time from 2:00 – 6:30 p.m. and enjoy a Dr. Seuss book and a craft.
Come celebrate with us and enjoy DIY Valentine’s Day crafting. Make your sweetie something or just something for yourself. An assortment of crafting supplies will be available to let your creativity flow. Iris folding, card making, and paper plate art, the list goes on and on. Looking forward to seeing you on Valentine’s Day!
